Job Responsibilities
Your specific duties as a Sr. Tooling Engineer will include:
- Provide onsite tooling support and assistance to the manufacturing plants both located in Montreal CA and Monterrey MX, and the manufacturing group with production and prototype tools, weld fixtures and gages.
- Support, recommend and advise with reviews of prototype and production tool designs externally at the tooling supplier and internally with the manufacturing team.
- Support prototype and production molding and welding trials at the vendor's location and in the COMPANY manufacturing plants.
- Support tooling ECN, modifications and repairs. Complete a feasibility study then estimate the cost and timing to implement changes.
- Maintain an up-to-date tool build tracking and timeline matrix to ensure that all timing milestones are achieved keeping the Director of Engineering and Manufacturing team up to date and aware of all possible timing delays and cost concerns.
- Travel will be required to follow the tool and part builds locally, and internationally on a more limited basis. The ability to travel without restriction outside the U.S. and with minimum advance notice is a must. Travel greater than 25% of the time can be required.
- Submit Cost justification for new or modified mold capital and track the project cost throughout the program.
- Track and forecast project costs in conjunction with the financial group.
- Research new and innovative technologies to analyze the potential for cost competitive applications. Identify candidate technologies and develop proposals for presentations to key decision makers.
- Provide plastic part and tool design solutions through the evaluation of mold filling analysis software that leads to quality parts with reduced mold debug time.
- Work in a cross functional environment in the development of high-volume thermoplastic parts spanning from part and tool design through processing and validation in the support of Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
- Maintain strong knowledge of thermoplastic material characteristics in part performance, dimensional capability and mold-ability.
- Recommend vendor selection for tooling in conjunction with purchasing department and executive management.
- Provide estimated tooling prices for use in development of offers to customers and internal studies.
- Work with Product Engineers for suitability of tooling design with the process concept, including production fixtures and assembly tools.
- Demonstrate experience in statistical tools such as DOE design/analysis, Gage R&R layout and analysis, as well process capability knowledge, (Cp/Cpk/Ppk), including analysis and control charting of data.
- Ensure that equipment and tooling standards and specifications are met or exceeded.
- Set-up tooling spare parts for new tools.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Minimum 10 to 15 years of hands-on experience in the design and fabrication of production and prototype tools for plastic manufacturing in the automotive industry is required.
- BS Mechanical/Technical Diploma/Degree is preferred or equivalent relevant experience, technical education, Moldmaking certificate and training with at least 10 years of work experience in plastic tooling design and material selection required.
- Must be able to read and understand complex blueprints with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Must have basic operational knowledge of the following software: MS Office, Word, Excel, and Project.
- Advanced 3D CAD software proficiency required, Keycreator, Catia or UG a plus.
- Ability to handle projects with multiple work streams, with proven leadership success over a wide variety of business problems. Proven planning abilities, including successful execution of such plans.
- Excellent communication skills for communicating within all hierarchies of the organization.
- Time Management skills.
- Bilingual in either French or Spanish a plus
Starting salary of $130,000 to $140,000 depending on education, skills, experience and level of experience
