Location: Ann Arbor, MI
Pay Rate: $43.92/hour (W2)
Duration: Long-term contract
Position Overview
This role supports advanced R&D efforts focused on the design, development, and validation of custom electronic circuits and systems for proof-of-concept devices and demonstration units. The engineer will work closely with cross‑disciplinary research teams to deliver prototypes, contribute to intellectual property, and support publications.
Key Responsibilities - Execute project work to meet defined targets and key performance indicators (KPIs), including reports and technical milestones
- Design and develop custom electronic circuits for proof-of-concept and demonstration devices
- Create schematic diagrams, PCB layouts, and component specifications
- Perform circuit simulation and analysis using industry-standard tools
- Design compact, robust packaging solutions for electronic assemblies
- Ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and shielding requirements
- Collaborate with team members on enclosure design, thermal management, and system integration
- Design control circuits for laser systems and optical components
- Implement laser safety protocols and interlock systems
- Develop precision timing and synchronization circuits for chip-scale laser applications
- Partner with vendors to build and test prototype circuits and assemblies
- Conduct performance validation and troubleshooting
- Document test procedures, results, and findings
- Contribute effectively within cross-disciplinary research teams, delivering outcomes such as prototypes, intellectual property, and publications (active interest in publishing is highly desirable)
- Participate in and support workplace safety culture and safety-related activities

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience - PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field
OR - Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with equivalent professional experience
- Technical Requirements
- Circuit Design: Strong proficiency in analog and digital circuit design, mixed-signal systems, and working knowledge of RF
- PCB & CAD Tools: Experience with Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar PCB design software
- Simulation: Proficiency with SPICE, LTSpice, or equivalent circuit simulation tools
- Programming: Familiarity with C/C++ and/or Python for driving circuits and lab bench testing
- Test Equipment: Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and laser measurement equipment

Preferred Qualifications - Experience with integrated photonic interconnects
- Familiarity with 3D modeling tools such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD
- Experience with rapid prototyping techniques (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining)
- Background in RF and/or microwave circuit integration
- Familiarity with the work environment and pace of research institutes
