RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a highly motivated Controls Engineer to support manufacturing operations by maintaining, optimizing, and troubleshooting automated production equipment and control systems. This role is responsible for ensuring maximum equipment uptime, improving manufacturing processes, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and supporting new product launches within a fast-paced production environment.
The ideal candidate will possess strong PLC, robotics, HMI, and automation experience, along with the ability to independently analyze issues, implement solutions, and collaborate effectively with maintenance, engineering, and production teams.
- Analyze and optimize machine performance utilizing PLC data, diagnostics, and production metrics.
- Lead root cause investigations for recurring and intermittent equipment, process, and controls-related issues.
- Develop and implement corrective actions to improve equipment reliability, quality, and productivity.
- Select, install, and integrate error-proofing and mistake-proofing devices to address quality concerns.
- Maintain and troubleshoot industrial Ethernet communication networks and connected control systems.
- Conduct audits of machine safety systems, safety PLCs, and related controls to ensure compliance and safe operation.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute controls-related projects supporting production and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with automation integrators, equipment manufacturers, and external vendors during equipment installation, upgrades, and troubleshooting activities.
- Support new equipment launches and ensure all equipment documentation is transferred to production prior to Start of Production (SOP), including:
- Equipment manuals
- Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Engineering drawings
- Spare parts recommendations
- Preventive maintenance documentation
- Lead manufacturing process improvements and provide recommendations to improve efficiency, throughput, and quality.
- Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs in partnership with production and maintenance teams.
- Support controls-related troubleshooting activities to minimize downtime and production interruptions.
- Mentor and support maintenance technicians by sharing technical knowledge and strengthening team capabilities.
- Assist with machinery installation, startup, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance activities.
- Evaluate equipment needs and support procurement of replacement parts, controls components, and tooling.
- Identify opportunities to reduce operating costs through automation, process optimization, and improved equipment performance.
- Ensure manufacturing equipment operates safely, efficiently, and reliably.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Programming, or a related technical field. Equivalent hands-on experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum 2+ years of experience as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer, Maintenance Technician, or similar role supporting automated manufacturing environments.
- Experience with robotic automation systems, automated assembly equipment, root cause analysis, preventive maintenance programs, and troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, and controls-related issues.
- Strong knowledge of industrial automation technologies, machine controls, industrial Ethernet networks, and high-volume manufacturing environments, including JIT, sequenced, batch, or automated production systems.
- Hands-on experience programming and troubleshooting Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs using Studio 5000, Cognex and/or Keyence vision systems, and FactoryTalk View Studio/PanelView HMI applications.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint), along with strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing environments.
- Experience with sequencing, batch, or automated production systems.
- Knowledge of industrial networking and Ethernet-based control systems.
- Experience supporting automotive or advanced manufacturing operations.
- Familiarity with machine safety standards, safety PLCs, and risk reduction methods.
- Experience supporting equipment launches, commissioning activities, and process improvements.
